Background/Aims: Mucinous ductal ectasia(MDE) of the regarded as a clinical disease entity. In the past two years, we had experienced 10 cases of MDE. We reviewed their clinicpathologic characteristics and compared them with those of other mucinous cystic lesions of the pancreas.
Methods: Retrospective study was performed with a study group of 10 cases of MDE and with a control group for 10 cases of mucinous cystadenoma and cystadenocarcinoma of the pancreas.
Results: Eight out of 10 cases underwent operations including 2 total pancreatectomies, 5 partial pancreatectomies and 1 bypass. Pathologic extents of MDE in specimens were larger than those in preoperative evaluation, and preoperative localizaton accuracy was 57%. Pathologic results indicated ductal hyperplasia in 29%, hyperplasia with atypia in 14%, hyperplasia with adenoma in 14% and malignant change in 43%. Combined pancreatitis was observed in 43%.
Conclusion: MDE should not be considered uncommon and therefore, should be included in differential diagnoses for recurrent pancreatitis. MDE is a premalignant or malignant lesion, and curative resection should be selected regardless of preoperative pathologic comfirmation.
